Balasore/Puri: At least one person was killed while three others sustained grievous injuries after being struck by lightning during nor'wester rain in separate places of Odisha on Wednesday.

Even though thunderstorm activities have plummeted temperature in coastal areas like Puri, Cuttack, Khurda, Balasore and Mayurbhanj, torrential rain accompanied by gusty wind and lightning have caused extensive damage in several areas of the region yesterday evening.

One person named Karunakar Murmu was killed after being struck by lightning at Badguduta village in Jamda area of Mayurbhanj.

Three persons including 2 women were also critically injured in lightning strikes in Khaira area of Balasore district. All of them have been admitted to Bhadrak hospital where they are currently undergoing treatment.

Besides, seven rooms were reduced to ashes after a fire outbreak following lightning strike at Sanakumari village in Khaira area.

In another incident, as many as 8 cattle sheltered under a tree were killed in lightning strike at Gurubai village under Krushnaprasad block in Puri district.
