 After reeling under intense heat and humid conditions, the people of Odisha can expect a break as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain and thunderstorm activities till June 2 in the State.

As per IMD’s Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar, Bolangir district recorded the highest maximum temperature of 42.2˚C degrees on Saturday. However, several parts of the State are likely to experience moderate drop in day temperature due to thunderstorm activities in coming days.

Weather Forecast by IMD issued on Saturday:

Day-1 (valid from 0830 hrs IST of 29.05.2022 up to 0830 hrs IST of 30.05.2022)

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Rayagada, Kalahandi.

Day-2 (valid from 0830 hrs IST of 30.05.2022 up to 0830 hrs IST of 31.05.2022)

Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh, Gajapati, Nayagarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh.

Yellow Warning( Be updated): Thunderstorm with lightning very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal.

Day-3 (valid from 0830 hrs IST of 31.05.2022 up to 0830 hrs IST of 01.06.2022)

Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Balasore.

In a related incident, a second year student of Berhampur University died in a lightning strike incident yesterday. The deceased Amit Nayak was reportedly sitting at Gopalpur beach with one of his friends when the incident occurred. Nayak was using headphone and his mobile phone exploded in the lightning strike.

An investigation is underway to ascertain the exact reason behind Nayak’s death while his friend is currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
