The severe cyclonic storm (SCS) ‘Mandous’ over southwest Bay of Bengal has now weakened into a cyclonic storm, informed India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday.

The cyclone is being monitored by the Doppler Weather Radar at Karaikal and Chennai. As per IMD, the system is likely to move northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Sriharikota around Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) as a cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 65- 75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph during midnight today to to early hours of tomorrow (December 10).

Storm Surge Warning

The storm surge of about 0.5 m height above the astronomical tide likely to inundate low-lying areas of north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the time of landfall.

Rainfall Warning

December 9: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over adjoining south Coastal Andhra Pradesh and north interior Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema.

December 10: It is likely to reduce to light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over north interior Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh.
