Rain to batter Odisha for next three days; IMD issues warning
A low-pressure system over the west-central adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and the nearby north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast is expected to bring a fresh spell of heavy rain across the state, which is likely to persist for the next three days, the India Meteorological Department predicted.
According to the regional weather office, the system is expected to intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area within the next 12 hours. Under its influence, rainfall that began on Wednesday has continued unabated, with the entire state forecast to receive moderate to heavy showers today.
The Met office has issued an orange alert for Koraput and Malkangiri districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall measuring between 7 cm and 20 cm. The remaining 28 districts are under yellow alert for heavy rain. Gusty winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph may accompany the showers in some areas, the weather office predicted.
A statewide yellow alert has also been issued for August 15 and 16, with heavy rainfall predicted on both days. The weather department has cautioned that continuous rain may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupt road transport.
With the sea expected to remain rough, fishermen have been strictly advised against venturing into the deep sea until August 16. Authorities have urged the public to remain alert and follow safety guidelines.
