Rainfall in Bhubaneswar (File)
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across Odisha, with over half of the state's districts likely to experience moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. A Yellow Warning has been issued for 20 districts, cautioning residents and authorities to remain alert for possible weather-related disruptions.
According to the latest bulletin from the regional meteorological centre in Bhubaneswar, districts under Yellow Warning include: Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Puri, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, and Bhadrak. These areas are expected to witness heavy downpours, lightning, and wind speeds ranging from 30 to 40 kmph.
In addition, similar warnings have been extended to districts in northern and western Odisha, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh, where inclement weather conditions are likely to persist.
The IMD has predicted that rainfall activity will continue in various parts of the state till at least August 8.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and brief spells of intense rain are expected during this period, which could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, disruption of traffic, and minor damage to vulnerable infrastructure.
Fishermen and people living in vulnerable rural and semi-urban areas have been advised to stay indoors and take necessary precautions. Authorities in the affected districts have been asked to remain on alert and take preventive measures to mitigate potential damages.
The continuing spell of rain is attributed to active monsoon conditions and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. The weather department has stated that while these rains may help replenish groundwater and aid agricultural activities, the possibility of localised flooding and lightning strikes cannot be ruled out.
People in the warned areas have been urged to follow weather updates and advisories issued by the IMD and district administrations to ensure their safety.
