The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that a low pressure area that formed over south Andaman Sea and neighbourhood is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by December 7. 

“The Low Pressure Area over south Andaman Sea & neighborhood with associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid tropospheric levels persists. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a Depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal by 06th December evening,” the IMD Bhubaneswar said in its evening weather bulletin. 

“Thereafter, it is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards, intensify further gradually into a Cyclonic Storm and reach Southwest Bay of Bengal near north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by 08th December morning,” the IMD added.  

If the system takes the shape of a cyclonic storm, it will be known as Mandous as suggested by the United Arab Emirates. The name of the cyclone will be in accordance with the World Meteorological Department's guidelines for naming tropical cyclones. This would be the season’s second post-monsoon cyclone.

As per the weather bureau, the system will have no direct impact over Odisha. However, Andaman & Nicobar Islands will witness very heavy rainfall under the influence of the system today.

The IMD said there will be enhanced rainfall activity with rainfall at a few places with isolated heavy rainfall over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from December 7 midnight. 

It is likely to increase with rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy at isolated places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over north Tamil Nadu & Puducherry on December 8. and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Tamilnadu on December 9.

Similarly, enhanced rainfall activity with rainfall at a few places with isolated heavy rainfall is likely to commence over south Andhra Pradesh from December 7 midnight. It is likely to increase with rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on December 8 and isolated heavy rainfall on December 9 over south Andhra Pradesh.
