IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohanty

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted an above normal monsoon for Odisha during the upcoming June–September 2025 season.

While releasing the  updated long range forecast for southwest monsoon seasonal rainfall during June to September 2025 and monthly rainfall and temperature outlook, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohanty informed that Odisha is expected to receive more than 106 percent of its Long Period Average (LPA) rainfall, surpassing its climatological normal of 1150 mm (recorded during 1971–2020).

This forecast brings hope to the state’s large agrarian population, especially as Odisha lies within the Monsoon Core Zone, where rainfall is projected to be above normal (>106% of LPA). The IMD also forecasts widespread above-normal rainfall across Central and South Peninsular India, contrasting with below-normal expectations in parts of Northeast India.

Key Highlights

Quantitatively, the southwest monsoon seasonal rainfall over the country as a whole is likely to be 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA) with a model error of ±4%, indicating that above normal rainfall is most likely over the country as a whole during the monsoon season (June to September), informed the IMD DG.

The southwest monsoon seasonal (June to September, 2025) rainfall is most likely to be above normal over Central India and South Peninsular India (>106% of LPA), normal over Northwest India (92-108% of LPA) and below normal over Northeast India (<94% of LPA).

The southwest monsoon seasonal rainfall over the Monsoon Core Zone (MCZ) consisting of most of the rainfed agriculture areas in the country is most likely to be above normal (>106% of LPA).

During June to September 2025, normal to above normal rainfall is very likely over most parts of the country except some areas of Northwest and East India and many areas of Northeast India where below normal rainfall is very likely.

The average rainfall for the country as a whole during June 2025 is most likely to be above normal (>108% of the Long Period Average (LPA)).
