Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Monday fixed special labour rate and food allowance for labours engaged in post cyclone restoration works.

A notification in this connection was issued by the energy department that read, “The government have approved the special labour rates for the post cyclone Yaas restoration works of the damaged electrical infrastructure to be undertaken by the DISCOMs and OPTCL.”

The daily wages for unskilled labour is set at Rs 462, semi-skilled labour at Rs 522 and skilled labour at Rs 597.

More importantly, these rates are applicable for the post Yaas restoration works only, stated the order.

The department further sought to make it clear: “These higher rates will not be allowed for the works undertaken under existing rate contracts for mobilisation of materials, equipment etc.”

Similarly, another notification was also issued by the same department fixing food allowances for the labourers to be deployed for post cyclone restoration works.

The government has allowed fooding and other charges of Rs. 175 per day per labourer to be deployed in post cyclone 'YAAS' restoration work.

“One triple layer mask needs to be provided to each worker per day out of this amount. This rate is applicable for post Cyclone 'YAAS' restoration work only,” read the letter.

Meanwhile, the Tata Power Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL) has decided to compensate its casual/temporary workers in case of accident / injury during restoration works of Cyclone "YAAS".

“In view of the impending severe cyclone "YAAS", which is likely to affect the Coastal District of Odisha in between May 25 – 27, it has been approved to extend the accidental benefit to the contractual and temporary employees who will be engaged in restoration work at the site damaged due to Cyclone 'YAAS", "an official releasr of TPCODL said.

Full cost of treatment will be borne by TPCODL in case of injury or hospitalization of any workmen who is engaged in restoration work undertaken by TPCODL.

In case of unfortunate death resulting from accident while undertaking restoration works by TPCODL, a compensation of Rs 10 lakh will be paid to the legal heir of deceased employee.

“The aforesaid financial assistance will be over and above any other benefit that the workmen may be entitled to as per law,” The TPCODL release said.
