The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued an ‘orange warning’ for thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching up to 40 to 50 kmph in some districts of Odisha on March 19 (Tuesday) and March 20 (Wednesday).

As per an IMD bulletin, an orange warning has been issued for 12 districts for tomorrow. During this time, gusty wind is likely to blow at a speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour.

Similarly, on March 20, the Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for four districts. Meanwhile, the met department has predicted heavy rain and hailstorm at some places too.

Day 1 (Valid from 8:30 am of 18.03.2024 to 8:30 am of 19.03.2024)

Yellow Warning:

Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Angul, Dhenkanal and Deogarh.

Day 2 (Valid from 8:30 am of 19.03.2024 to 8:30 am of 20.03.2024)

Orange Warning:

i)Thunderstorm with lightning and hail accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Angul, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal.

ii) Thunderstorm with lightning and heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Ganjam and Khordha.

Yellow Warning:

Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Gajapati, Deogarh and Keonjhar.

Day 3 (Valid from 8:30 am of 20.03.2024 to 8:30 am of 21.03.2024)

Orange Warning:

Thunderstorm with lightning and heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Cuttack, Nayagarh, Khordha and Kandhamal.

Yellow Warning:

Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri and Jagatsinghpur.

The IMD advised people to keep a watch on the weather for worsening conditions and be ready to move to safer places accordingly. It also advised people to take shelter in pukka structures, avoid taking shelter under trees and move away from electric poles and wires.

Meanwhile, as predicted, thundershower with lightning occurred at several places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar late Sunday night and early Monday morning.
