Monsoon advances; intense heat in Odisha

Bringing a hint of relief and anticipation for the sweltering regions of the east coast, the southwest monsoon made its first advance over parts of the South Bay of Bengal, South Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and portions of the North Andaman Sea, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed on Tuesday.

The arrival of the monsoon in these regions signals the beginning of the seasonal shift in weather patterns, raising hopes for respite from the intense summer heat.

Widespread moderate rainfall with heavy rainfall at a few places occurred over the Nicobar Islands during past 24 hours. Thus, the widespread rainfall with isolated/scattered heavy rainfall continued over the Nicobar Islands during past two days. The strength and depth of westerly wind increased continuously during past 2 days over parts of south Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea.

Conditions are favorable for further advance of southwest Monsoon over some parts of south Arabian Sea,
Maldives & Comorin area; some more parts of South Bay of Bengal, entire Andaman & Nicobar Islands, remaining
parts of Andaman Sea; and some parts of central Bay of Bengal during next 3-4 days, said IMD.

Meteorologists note that the early progression of the monsoon winds over the Andaman and Nicobar is a crucial indicator for forecasting the monsoon onset over mainland India.

Odisha Reels Under Intense Heat And Humid Conditions

Meanwhile, the eastern Indian state of Odisha continues to reel under extreme heat conditions. For the past three consecutive days, daytime temperatures have consistently crossed the 40°C mark in several areas, leading to discomfort and heat-related stress among residents.

In the capital city, Bhubaneswar, this morning observations recorded a temperature of 32.7°C at 8:30 AM, accompanied by high humidity levels at 71.6%, making the weather feel even more oppressive.

The combined effect of high temperature and humidity is making outdoor activities difficult and increasing the risk of heatstroke.

Health authorities have issued advisories urging people to stay hydrated, avoid exposure to the sun during peak hours, and take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses.

The IMD has predicted that relief could be expected in Odisha once the monsoon progresses further into the mainland, but until then, citizens have been advised to remain cautious and follow weather updates.

However, there is also a forecast of thunderstorm in some parts of Odisha, the IMD said.
