The well-marked low pressure area which concentrated over north-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha coast intensified into a depression on Sunday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that the depression is likely to move in west-north-west direction and cross West Bengal coast near Digha in the next 6 hours. The depression is likely to maintain its intensity for the next 24 hours.

"Depression over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal & North Odisha about 10 km southeast of Digha (West Bengal). To move west-northwestwards and cross West Bengal & adjoining north Odisha coasts close to Digha during next 6 hours," tweeted IMD.

Moreover, there is a forecast for heavy rainfall activities in different parts of Odisha during the period. Already several parts of the state experienced moderate to heavy rainfall activities in the past 24 hours.

The heavy rainfall activities triggered by the well-marked low pressure area led to acute waterlogging conditions in different parts of the state.

There has been considerable rise in the water level of major rivers following enhanced rainfall activities in the past couple of days in the state sparking flood fear among the people in several coastal districts.
