Low Pressure likely to bring heavy rain to Odisha from August 12

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

IMD predicts heavy rainfall in Odisha from August 12-14 due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, with warnings for thunderstorms and gusty winds in several districts.

Odisha weather updates

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across Odisha from August 12 due to a possible low-pressure area over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to form on August 13, bringing widespread showers and thunderstorms to several parts of the state until August 14.

Rainfall and Weather Alerts

Under the influence of this developing system, the IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in many districts, along with isolated spells of thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds. Four districts, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Gajapati have been placed under a yellow warning for lightning and rain until 8:30 am tomorrow. Additionally, 20 other districts may witness thunderstorms with wind speeds of 30–40 kmph.

Current Weather Conditions

At present, Odisha is already experiencing scattered rainfall due to a trough line and the monsoon’s influence. Lightning and heavy showers have been reported in various places, keeping conditions humid and unstable.

Advisory for Fishermen

In view of the anticipated rough weather, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea off the south Odisha coast from August 13. The IMD has cautioned of strong winds and turbulent sea conditions that could pose risks to fishing operations.

The approaching low-pressure system is expected to bring much-needed rain to agricultural regions but may also cause waterlogging and localised flooding in low-lying areas. Authorities have urged residents to stay alert and follow official weather updates.
