Low pressure area forms, likely to intensify; IMD predicts heavy rainfall in Odisha districts

A low pressure area has formed over Southwest Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.

The system, which developed early this morning at around 5:30 am, is expected to intensify further within the next 24 hours and move in a west-northwestward direction.

As per the IMD, the associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwards with height. It is likely to move slowly west-northwestwards and become more marked over Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood during next 24 hours.

Rainfall Activities In Odisha

Under the influence of the system, Odisha is likely to experience widespread rainfall over the next three days. The southwest monsoon is also expected to strengthen once again, with favourable conditions for its further advancement into more parts of Odisha and adjoining areas of Chhattisgarh.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in various parts of the state. Districts such as Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Mayurbhanj, and Balasore are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday. Wind speeds may also range between 30 to 40 kmph in some areas.

According to weather experts, the intensity and spread of rainfall across Odisha may increase, especially as the monsoon current gains momentum. The IMD has advised people in vulnerable regions to remain alert and avoid low-lying or waterlogged areas.

Rainfall Activity Till June 19

Rainfall activity is likely to continue till June 19, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Authorities have been asked to stay prepared for any eventualities arising from heavy rains and strong winds.
