IMD issues Orange Warning for thunderstorm, lightning and hail alert for several Odisha districts

Several parts of Odisha experienced light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorm activities in the past 24 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued an 'orange warning' for thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph and hail in some parts of Odisha in the next 24 hours.

As per IMD, the anti-cyclonic circulation lies over Westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast in lower tropospheric levels.

Under its influence, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds is very likely over Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha during March 19-21 with possibility of hailstorm and squall (speed reaching 50-60 kmph) on March 19, 2024.

Orange Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning, and gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph and hail is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angulm Dhenkanal, and Jajpur.

Hail is likely at one or two places over the districts of Nayagarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Sonepur, and Boudh. Thunderstorm with lightning and heavy rainfall is very likely (7cm to 11cm) at one or two places likely over districts of Cuttack, Nayagarh, Kandhamal,Dhenkanal, and Jajpur.

Day 2 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 20.03.2024 to 0830 hrs IST of 21.03.2024)

Orange Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning, and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Gajapati, Ganjam, Khordha, Nayagarh, Puri,

Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm) at one or two places likely over districts of Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack and Nayagarh.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
