Normal life came to a grinding halt following heavy rainfall that lashed smart city Bhubaneswar on Monday afternoon. As per initial reports, the rainfall adversely affected movement of vehicular traffic and caused water-logging in several low-lying pockets as well.

As per India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar recorded 46.8 mm of rainfall till 2:30 pm (from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm) today.

The brief spell of rain exposed Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) monsoon preparedness. The residents also blamed poor drainage systems and desilting works for waterlogging conditions.

Be it the main service road in front of ISCKON temple or other parts of the city, accumulation of rain water for long hours emerged as a major concern. There are reports of several vehicles developing snags due to water-logging conditions of major streets.

“Roads are dug up at several places and it may pose threat to the lives of people during rains,” said a local resident.
