The cyclonic circulation over Myanmar coast is likely to move northwestwards and merge into northeast and adjoining East-central Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over the same region around September 24 evening, said India Meteorological Department (IMD) DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Thursday.

According to Mohapatra, the low pressure area over Jharkhand has weakened and there is less possibility of heavy rainfall in Odisha today. However, some parts of Chhattisgarh might experience heavy rainfall activities, he said.

“Yesterday’s cyclonic circulation near Myanmar coast has intensified and it will concentrate in low pressure area. It will move towards the Odisha coast. The cyclonic circulation and low pressure will trigger heavy rains in several parts of Odisha from September 26. Interior parts of the State will experience heavy rainfall on September 28,” said Mohapatra.

As the fresh low pressure will pass at a relatively low level, its impact will be more on coastal and south Odisha between September 26 and 28 (7 cm to 12 cm rainfall).

“As the monsoon is active in south China Sea, we are experiencing back to back cyclonic circulations,” Mohapatra added.
