Fresh low pressure brewing over Bay of Bengal, rain to lash Odisha for next five days

A fresh cyclonic circulation has developed over the northeast Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify into a low-pressure area, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted on Tuesday. Under its influence, rainfall activity across Odisha is likely to increase in the coming days.

While many districts are already experiencing scattered showers, the IMD has forecast widespread rain across the state for the next five days. In the next 24 hours, five southern districts- Rayagada, Gajapati, Koraput, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri, are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

An orange warning has been issued for Koraput and Malkangiri districts as very heavy rainfall is expected today. Similarly, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, and Nuapada districts are under a yellow warning, with the possibility of heavy rain and thunderstorm activity. Gusty surface winds with speeds reaching 30–40 kmph may also lash parts of these regions.

Although the low-pressure system is not expected to intensify further, the sea is likely to remain rough. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Bay of Bengal for the next five days due to adverse sea conditions.

“Light to moderate rainfall is expected in several parts of the state, with one or two places may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall activity in the next 24 hours. Besides, several districts may witness heavy rain and thunderstorm activity with gusty surface winds with speeds reaching 30–40 kmph,” said Manorama Mohanty, Bhubaneswar met centre director.
