Cyclonic circulation to trigger heavy rainfall in Odisha from today
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in various parts of Odisha over the next 48 hours due to an active cyclonic circulation over southern Bangladesh and adjoining areas.
Under its influence, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in several regions of the state, particularly in North interior and coastal Odisha, the weather office predicted.
The IMD has forecast intense showers on Wednesday and Thursday, with isolated places expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30-35 kmph are also expected.
Districts such as Keonjhar, Nuapada, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, and Bolangir are under special watch as forecasts suggest wind speeds may reach 30-40 kmph along with heavy downpours. Coastal Odisha and 15 surrounding districts are also expected to witness thunder and lightning activities.
In the past 24 hours, Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi district recorded the highest rainfall at 55 mm, as per official data.
Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during the adverse weather conditions.
Fishermen and residents in low-lying areas have been warned against venturing into the sea or flooded zones.
“An upper air cyclonic circulation is lying over Gangetic West Bengal and its surrounding areas. Under the influence of the system, several parts of Odisha are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall. One or two places may expect heavy rainfall with lighting and thunder,” said Bhubaneswar MeT centre director Manorama Mohanty.
