Cyclonic circulation over north Andaman Sea: IMD DG on its impact on Odisha

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) foretells the emergence of a cyclonic circulation over the North Andaman Sea on October 20, evolving into a low-pressure area by October 22 in the Central Bay of Bengal. IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra indicated potential rainfall in Odisha from October 23 to 25, with maximum downpour expected on October 24. The system may intensify into a depression by October 24.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday predicted the formation of a fresh cyclonic circulation over the North Andaman Sea around October 20 and will intensify into a low-pressure area around October 22 over the Central Bay of Bengal.

In an exclusive interview with OTV, IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra shared the impact of the system on Odisha and said, “October is prone to cyclone for Odisha. As per the prediction, a cyclonic circulation will form on October 20 over the Andaman Sea. It will move west and north-west ward and intensify into a low-pressure area over the central Bay of Bengal around October 22. Later it will move towards north-west direction. It is likely to intensify into a depression around October 24.”

“Under its influence, Odisha is likely to experience rainfall activities from October 23 to 25. Odisha will experience maximum rainfall on October 24,” Mohapatra added.

Commenting on the rainfall activities, he said, “Whenever a low pressure or depression forms over the Bay of Bengal and it moves north-west wards, coastal region experience rainfall. Later, interior districts witness rainfall activities. The prediction is for the next seven days. Things about rainfall will be clear after two to three days once the system intensifies into a low-pressure area.”

Asked about possible cyclone threat to Odisha, the IMD DG said, “October is prone to cyclones. We are monitoring the system every day. We have shared the prediction for the next seven days.”
