With barely hours left for the cyclonic storm ‘Gulab’ to make landfall anywhere between Gopalpur in Odisha and Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh by today midnight, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has listed the possible impact and damage the cyclonic storm might cause in several parts of the State.

The cyclonic storm Gulab over west-central Bay of Bengal moved nearly westwards with a speed of 10 kmph during last 6 hours and lay centered at 0530 hrs IST of today about 270 km east-southeast of Gopalpur, said Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar on Sunday.

Several parts of Odisha are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall under the impact of the cyclonic storm. The cyclonic storm is likely to cause some damage in different parts of Odisha due to strong winds and heavy rainfall.

The IMD has listed some possible impact (district-wise) and suggested actions which could play a crucial role in saving precious lives.
Ganjam, Gajapati and Puri:
-Damage to thatched huts. -Minor damage to power and communication lines due to breaking of branches.
-Major damage to Kutcha and minor damage to Pucca roads .
-Some damage to paddy crops, banana, papaya trees and orchards Sea water inundation in low-lying areas after erosion of Kutcha embankments in Ganjam district.
-Flash flood/waterlogging and inundation in low-lying areas.
-Temporary disruption of municipal services, waterlogging in underpass road and occasional reduction of visibility causing traffic congestion in urban areas.
-Rise in water level of rivers (Nagavali, Rushikulya, Vansadhara, parts of lower Mahanadi basin).
-Localised landslides, mudslides in Ganjam and Gajapati districts.
Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Rayagada:
-Damage to Kutcha roads and vulnerable structure.
-Flash flood/Water logging and inundation in low-lying areas.
-Temporary disruption of municipal services, waterlogging in underpass road and occasional reduction of visibility causing traffic congestion in urban areas.
-Damage to horticulture/standing crops in some areas due to inundation.
-Localised landslides in hilly areas.
Khordha and Nayagarh districts:
-Flash flood/Water logging and inundation in low-lying areas.
-Possibility of some damage to informal/Kutcha road
.-Waterlogging in underpass road and occasional reduction of visibility causing traffic congestion in urban areas.
-Damage to horticulture/standing crops in some areas due to inundation.
Action Suggested:
-Keep arrangement for drainage of excess water.
- Avoid movement in affected areas and staying in vulnerable structure.
- Check for traffic congestion on your route before leaving for your destination.
-Follow traffic advisories that are issued in this regard.
- Avoid taking shelter within caves of hilly areas.
