Cyclone Dana landfall process latest update: IMD DG shares important details

Cyclonic Storm Dana to intensify, hitting Odisha and Bengal coasts on October 24-25. IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra confirms landfall near Bhitarkanika with wind speeds up to 120 kmph.

IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Cyclone Dana

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday made it clear that the cyclonic storm Dana will intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal by the early morning of October 24 and cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island close to Bhitarkanika and Dhamara (Odisha).

The landfall process is likely to occur from the night of October 24 to the morning of October 25, 2024. The maximum speed during the landfall process is likely to be around 100-110 kmph and gusting 120 kmph, informed IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

As per IMD DG, Cyclone Dana landfall is a process and there is a chance of slow movement. The landfall process usually takes around 5-6 hours. Hence, heavy rainfall, wind and storm surge will reach the peak on October 24 (midnight) and it may continue till October 25 morning/afternoon.

“So far, we have not changed any forecast regarding the wind speed of cyclone Dana which is likely to be around 100 to 120 kmph. Today, we have issued a forecast about the place where the cyclone Dana will pass through. After landfall, cyclone Dana will move through interior parts of Odisha and gradually weaken,” said Mohapatra.

According to the IMD DG, all the coastal areas of Odisha will experience rainfall activities under its impact today. There is also a probability of heavy and extremely heavy rainfall in some districts of Odisha on October 24 and October 25.
