Internet fumes as elderly woman charged Rs 800 for only 6 minutes to use Rajasthan hotel restroom

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

An elderly woman was charged Rs 805 for using a restroom at a hotel near Khatu Shyam Temple, Rajasthan, sparking social media outrage. The incident highlights exploitation and lack of public facilities.

Bill Receipt

In a deeply distressing incident that has sparked widespread anger across social media, an elderly woman was charged Rs 805 for using a restroom for just six minutes at a hotel near the revered Khatu Shyam Temple in Rajasthan.

The episode, described as "inhuman" and "shameful," was shared by a family member on LinkedIn and has since gone viral, highlighting the dark side of exploitation even in places of spiritual sanctity.

Medical Emergency Met With Greed

The elderly woman, who was on a pilgrimage to the temple, suddenly experienced severe stomach cramps, nausea, and extreme weakness, making it an urgent medical emergency. Her family desperately searched the temple’s vicinity for a clean and usable restroom, but to their horror, there were no appropriate public facilities available within a one-kilometre radius.

The only options nearby were open public bathing areas—completely unsuitable given her fragile condition. In desperation, the family turned to a nearby hotel, hoping for some humanity.

“Rs 800 for the Restroom”—A Moment of Heartlessness

Despite seeing the woman in obvious distress, the hotel receptionist reportedly demanded Rs 800 upfront for allowing her to use the restroom. The family, shocked and helpless, had no choice but to pay the amount to ensure the woman got immediate relief.

"While we were taking care of Maa, Papa desperately looked for a washroom," the family member wrote. "We rushed to a hotel and begged at the reception. The receptionist looked at my mother’s condition and still said, ‘Rs 800 to use the restroom.’ We were in shock. No empathy. No hesitation."

Illegal Billing Practice Adds Fuel to the Fire

The ordeal didn’t end there. When the family requested a proper bill for the payment, the receptionist reportedly offered a Rs 100 discount—on the condition that they would not ask for a formal receipt. This illegal and unethical behaviour further enraged readers, many of whom condemned the hotel’s conduct as not just exploitative, but criminally insensitive.

Social Media Erupts with Condemnation

The post struck a chord with thousands of users, especially considering the spiritual significance of the Khatu Shyam Temple, which draws pilgrims from all corners of the country. Many questioned the lack of proper public facilities around such a major religious site, while others slammed the hotel staff for lacking the most basic sense of compassion.
