Humanity Fails: Man rides 80 km in rain with wife’s body after hit-and-run, bystanders look away

A harrowing scene unfolded on the Nagpur-Jabalpur National Highway when 35-year-old Gyarshi Yadav was killed in a hit-and-run, forcing her injured husband to transport her body 80 kilometres on a motorcycle in pouring rain after repeated pleas for help went unanswered.

Fatal Collision

The tragedy occurred near Deolapar, Maharashtra, when a speeding truck grazed the couple’s bike. Gyarshi, riding pillion, fell onto the road and was run over by the same truck, which fled the spot.

Desperate Pleas Ignored

Shaken and hurt, Amit Yadav stood on the rain-soaked highway, begging passing motorists to stop. “I folded my hands and asked for help, but no one came forward,” he told reporters. Witnesses say dozens of vehicles passed without offering assistance or even calling for an ambulance.

With no help in sight, Amit tied his wife’s body to the motorcycle’s pillion seat with her dupatta and began the 80-kilometre ride to their village. Battling grief, injury, and heavy rain, he was eventually intercepted by police. Videos of his journey, captured by onlookers, have since gone viral, sparking outrage nationwide.

Authorities took custody of the body and sent it to Indira Gandhi Medical College for a post-mortem. A case has been filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and efforts are on to trace the truck driver.

Nationwide Outrage

The incident has ignited a debate over public apathy and the absence of prompt emergency response systems on Indian highways, with many calling it a grim reflection of society’s indifference in moments of crisis.
