In a bizarre incident, a groom allegedly called off the wedding just because his bride secured low marks in her Class 12 exam. The incident took place in Tirva Kotwali area of Kannauj district in Uttar Pradesh.

According to Amarujala report, the bride’s family has alleged that the groom’s family called off the wedding after their dowry demands were not met even though they had performed the ‘Godh Bharai’ ritual.

For the unversed, Godh Bharai ceremony is a function where the woman of the groom's family mutually accepts the bride into their family.

The bride's father alleged that the groom's family tried to break the relationship by telling them that girl has low marks in the Class 12 marksheet. Worried by this, he has filed a complaint against the groom and his family demanding strict police action.

According to the complaint, he had fixed the marriage of his daughter Soni with Sonu, son of Ramshankar of Baganwa village. Following this, the families also performed their ‘Godh Bharai’ ceremony on December 4, 2022.
Reportedly, in the ceremony, he had spent over Rs 60,000 and also gave a gold ring worth Rs 15,000 to the groom.

However, after a few days of the ceremony, the groom’s family raised the demand for dowry.

When the bride's father expressed his inability to give more dowry, the groom’s family broke the alliance stating that the girl has low marks in her intermediate.

Reportedly, the bride’s family even tried to convince the relative, but the groom’s remained adamant about their demand, forcing the bride’s father to seek help from the police.

Meanwhile, the police are trying to solve the case by counselling the two families. However, if both parties don’t reach a consensus, they file an FIR and take appropriate action, said the police station in-charge PN Bajpai.
