The girl takes a step back and gazes at the thief. From her gesture, it seems she was heartbroken and crying. This melted the thief's heart and he stopped. 

Slowly, the thief walked towards the girl and returned the handbag to her. The girl instantly grabs her bag but steps ahead towards the thief while making eye contact with him.
