The wedding stage was all set, the arrangements were made, and guests had arrived, but at the last moment the bride backed off from the marriage.
While some might think that the bride had taken the decision in a haste, there is a backstory.
It all started when the 'baraat' arrived at the venue of this wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district. The groom and several relatives part of the 'baraat' were apparently under the heavy influence of alcohol. In fact, the groom could not even stand on his own due to his intoxication during the ‘Varmala’ ceremony.
The unfolding events left the bride shocked and she decided to call off the wedding, an IANS report said.
According to the report, the wedding ot the bride, a resident of Safipur in Unno, was fixed with a youth from Kanpur.
While, both families tried to convince her but she refused saying, "What is the future of a man who could not stay away from alcohol on his own marriage day."
Later, the matter reached the police station, where both parties agreed to return the cash and valuables exchanged during pre-marriage rituals.
Station House Officer Safipur, Avanish Singh said that a mutual settlement has been made between the two sides. "The two sides have agreed to return gifts exchanged between them earlier," he said.
