Millet Idli Seller Chittem Sudheer
In a country where traditional grains are slowly making a comeback, one man’s millet magic is not only winning hearts but also raking in impressive profits. Chittem Sudheer, a farmer-turned-entrepreneur from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, is rewriting the rules of food entrepreneurship. With a strong academic background in Agricultural Economics and a deep-rooted connection to farming, Sudheer’s story is a powerful blend of perseverance, innovation, and purpose.
What began in 2018 with a modest investment of Rs 50,000 is now a thriving business that generates a staggering monthly income of Rs 7.5 lakh, all through the humble yet mighty millet idli.
Sudheer’s food stall, Vasana Poli, located in the bustling MVP Colony of Visakhapatnam, has become a breakfast hotspot. Opening as early as 6:30 AM, it sees a steady stream of health-conscious customers eager to get their hands on his signature millet idlis. These aren’t your regular idlis, they are made from a nutritious mix of eight different millets and steamed in vistaraku leaves, known for their natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.
To accompany the idlis, Sudheer serves chutneys crafted from vegetables like gourd, carrot, and ginger, turning every meal into a nourishing experience.
Sudheer's impact goes far beyond his stall. Every month, he sources around 700 kilograms of millets directly from tribal farmers in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam districts. In a commendable move, he pays them above-market rates, ensuring that they earn fairly and consistently. His business model doesn’t just profit him, it uplifts entire communities.
Starting wasn’t easy. Sudheer faced resistance from within his own family, who doubted the viability of selling millet-based food. But his belief in healthy eating and local sourcing never wavered. Over time, his consistency and innovation bore fruit quite literally. His work has even earned praise from former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, who lauded Sudheer’s role in promoting nutritious food and supporting indigenous farming.
Chittem Sudheer’s journey is a powerful reminder that entrepreneurship isn’t just about making profits, it can be a tool for social change. By reviving millets and promoting clean, local eating, he has set an example for aspiring entrepreneurs across India. From a small food stall to an inspiring enterprise, Sudheer has shown that with passion and purpose, even a millet idli can change lives.
