Know about Caucasian Shepherd dogs and their qualities

  • The Caucasian shepherd is a giant working dog breed that originates from the Caucasus regions such as Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

  • This dog breed is of two types, the Mountain type and the Steppe type.

  • The Mountain type is the one that has long-coated hair and a heavier body mass whereas the Steppe type has shorter-coated hair with a lighter body mass.

  • They can reach an average height of about 30 inches and weigh between 55 to 77 kg. They live from 10 to 20 years.

  • They are loyal, courageous, protective and highly territorial by nature.

  • They can guard livestock and property against large and small predators such as wolves and coyotes.

  • These breeds are generally kind towards small children but can be extremely lethal for strangers and other animals if not trained and socialised properly.

  • Caucasian Shepherd dogs are intelligent but sometimes their independent and stubborn nature makes them hard to train.
