The internet fervour over the wide-eyed, toothy Labubu doll has gone ‘desi’, with Odisha taking centre stage in a delightful cultural twist. Entrepreneurs and fans alike are celebrating the unique ‘Labu Bou,’ a Sambalpuri saree-clad version of Labubu that brings Odisha’s rich textile tradition into the viral toy phenomenon.

Labubu, the cult-favourite plush toy originally created by artist Kasing Lung and commercialised through Hong Kong’s Pop Mart, has become a global icon. What began as a quirky collectible has become a medium for cultural storytelling.

Embraced by celebrities worldwide, from Rihanna and Dua Lipa to BLACKPINK’s Lisa, the doll has earned a place as both a fashion accessory and a collector’s item. In India, Labubu’s popularity soared when stars like Ananya Panday and Disha Patani showcased their collections.

Made in Odisha: Enter Labu Bou

Fueled by the craze, entrepreneur Orissa Lee Patnaik launched a state-themed Labubu makeover on Instagram, and Odisha’s edition shone brightest.

Dubbed Labu Bou, this charming rendition dons a black-and-red Sambalpuri saree, sets it off with chunky silver jhumkas, layered necklaces, and bold bangles. Her look, complete with red flowers in her hair, a striking red bindi, and a nose ring, embodies the festive flair of Odisha

Odisha’s Cultural Pride on a Shelf

Labu Bou appears to be more than a fashionable doll, now standing as a miniature tribute to Odisha’s iconic weaves and jewellery. From the vivid patterns of Sambalpuri textiles to the traditional silver ornaments, the doll reflects the state’s vibrant identity.

The creativity has sparked fan requests for dolls representing more Indian states, prompting Patnaik to roll out Part III of her collection.

A Visual Tour of India’s Regional Labubus

Patnaik’s entire collection turns the Labubu craze into a cultural journey of India, from West Bengal’s Durga Puja-ready Laboudi to Kerala’s bridal charm in Lab Amma, and Punjab’s phulkari beauty in Labinder. But it’s Labu Bou’s Sambalpuri elegance that resonates strongly with Odisha, placing the state firmly in the spotlight of India’s trending styles.
