Even as e-commerce and online shopping have become the best and easiest option these days, shopping malls are still thriving in big cities. As per reports, as many as 11 shopping malls became operational in major cities in 2023.

In the previous year, Hyderabad witnessed the completion of three shopping malls while Pune and Chennai had two each. One shopping mall each came up in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.

Meanwhile, a social media user has sparked a debate online about the rising trend of malls in big cities while there is a need for more public spaces and natural scenery.

Taking to her X handle, a woman going by the name of Ray Strings (@Purba_Ray) shared, “Malls are dying yet we have even more malls coming up. Give us well-maintained public spaces with fountains, more parks, running tracks, open-air concert spaces instead of boring shopping malls where no one shops.”

She further wrote, “Local markets are way more vibrant and affordable for customers as well as traders than malls. All they need is clean washroom facilities, some nice cafés to catch your breath.”

“Feel the same when I travel overseas. Imagine travelling to countries known for their textiles and handicrafts but all you see is Fendi, Ferragamo, Gucci or an H&M - Zara. These international brands have killed the uniqueness of countries,” she concluded.

Social media users were quick to react to her tweet and seconded every thought of her.

“Give us libraries or reading halls...somewhere people don't have to pay to just sit and read,” commented a user.

Another user shared, “Huge parks with the fragrance of wet soil and pretty trees to look at, yes please!”

“Big yes. Public spaces with free access, vibrant diverse gardens, play areas, and walk areas, are 100 times better. Sadly where is the money in that for the builders and politicians with the kickbacks. Very very few leaders in power have vision,” commented another user.
