Gen Z employee's leave application

A Gen Z employee’s leave application to his boss has ignited a debate on the oppressive work culture prevailing in India, highlighting generational shifts. The employee’s concise and direct message contrasts the traditional practices of the previous generation, sparking discussions on the behaviour difference.

Investor Siddharth Shah has sparked the discussion on whether employees these days should request leave or simply inform their managers. The email from the Gen Z employee has gained massive traction online.

The application mail just reads, “Hi Siddharth, I will be on leave on 8th Nov, 2024. Bye” This is very contrast to the long emails people write explaining the reason for their leave. This has sparked a debate about the modern, direct style of simply informing the boss of the intended absence without asking for permission or offering any justification.

The straightforwardness of the Gen Z employee has garnered over 1.2 million views and hundreds of comments reflecting various perspectives. While many have argued that the directness should be normalized because we Indians most of the time have to justify the need for leaves, while others maintained that there should be decorum and respect in the email.

“I have full faith, GenZ kids will save us from generational cycle of oppressive work culture!” shared a user.

Another user commented, “Managers few years ago had the audacity to deny the leaves for no reason. Plus they wanted to know why exactly you need a leave, even if it’s a personal reason. GenZ will shock them!”

“Work is a part of life, it isn't life. PERIOD,” shared another user.

“I admire my GenZ colleagues. No romanticising of suffering and employee loyalty nonsense. Best thing is they get the job done and leave. Somehow their quality of work is much higher than their seniors while optimising on time to do that quantum of work,” shared another user.
