Cheems, the viral dog that inspired several memes on social media platforms died of cancer, its owners informed through an Instagram post. The Instagram star was suffering from cancer.

It fell asleep during its last thoracentesis surgery and never woke up. It was lovingly called as Balltze by its owners and social media users.

Sharing the tragic news on Instagram, the owners wrote, “Ball Ball fell asleep on 18/8. He fell asleep on Friday morning during his last thoracentesis surgery. Along with the post, they also shared several pictures of the dog and further wrote, “Don’t be sad, please remember the joy that Balltze brought to the world. A Shiba Inu with a round smiling face connecting you and me, he has helped many people during the pandemic and brought a lot of joy to many of you, but now his mission has been completed.”

Balltze shot to fame in 2017 after its pictures went viral on social media. Its popularity increased when an awkward photo of the dog became an iconic meme.
