A few days after heartbreaking visuals of captain Anshuman Singh’s widow Smriti Singh went viral as she received the posthumous Kirti Chakra awarded to her husband by President Murmu, parents of Captain Singh came out against her seeking revision of the crucial Army policy – next of kin (NOK).

Captain Anshuman, a 23-year-old Army doctor, lost his life in Siachen while rescuing others in a fire.

“She has taken away all the awards and the money while we are left with a photo of our martyred son hanging on the wall with a garland on it,” alleged Captain Singh’s father.

“The marriage was just five months old and there is no child. Anshuman’s wife doesn’t live with us now,” he added.

After parents of Captain Anshuman Singh speaking up on Next of Kin policies, now Smt. Promila Devi, mother of Commander Nishant Singh who lost life in a MiG crash, has also expressed her pain.

She revealed that she hasn't received anything as all the money went to Mr. Singh’s wife. She added that in her old age there's no one to look after her and she is facing difficult times. Speaking to Amar Ujala News, Singh’s mother lamented that parents of brave officers who lose their lives on duty are being neglected and has also requested for review of policies.

She said that while widow of the officers definitely deserve compensation, parents who are completely dependent on their sons should also be beneficiary of the grants.

Worth mentioning, as per Army rules, when a cadet or officer gets married, their spouse’s name is listed as their next of kin rather than their parents. In case of a soldier’s death during service, the ex-gratia amount is given to the ‘next of kin’.
