Rs 76 lakh salary was not worth it! 25YO ex-employee was happy after getting laid off from job, here's why
Cierra Desmaratti, a 24-year-old actuarial analyst with Deloitte in Chicago, was informed by the company's HR that she was being laid off. She cried and was unstoppable until she fell asleep. Anyone would. Though it was not her dream job, it was paying her $90,000 (around Rs 76 lakh). Of course, losing a job means losing the means of survival, and when it is a high-paid job, it would be definitely shocking and leave anyone depressed.
However, Desmaratti said that being laid off was one of the best things that could have happened to her.
Desmaratti hailed from a low-income family and joined Deloitte in September 2022. Around 80-90 freshers alongside her also joined the company. After joining the company, she found her peers dressed in pressed suit jackets and designer pieces. She immediately felt 'out of place at the company.'
Talking to Business Insider, Desmaratti said, "The T.J. Maxx clothes I wore had been a splurge, but I no longer felt like they were adequate."
"I felt anything but normal at Deloitte. I felt like I had to dim my personality to fit in with my peers and struggled to hit my stride in the consulting firm's fast-paced hustle culture," she added.
Desmaratti said that she had started working for 11 hours and started experiencing mental and physical illness. She developed back ache for sitting on the chair all day. She munched on snacks to handle the assignments for which she gained 9 kg in a few months. She felt the most physically unhealthy ever at the time.
Later, when it was time for her performance review, her coach said that she hadn't done well in the past few months. This left her surprised as no one had raised any concerns about her performance ever.
Though surprised, to improve her performance, she started making more effort. However, it was then she received the call from HR that she was being laid off.
The call left Desmaratti disturbed and what immediately struck her mind was the financial blow.
"I didn't love my job. But, my $90,000 salary was my means of survival. I had two weeks' severance, and a bit of money in savings, but I had no other job prospects," said Desmaratti.
I cried myself to sleep that night and spent the next day frantically trying to log out of all the programs on my work computer," she added.
After two months of job hunting, Desmaratti finally found a remote job as an actuarial analyst for Transamerica. Well, this job brought her the actual work-life balance she was craving for.
Desmaratti's work at Transamerica was similar to Deloitte's, but the work culture was quite different. The superiors at her new workplace encouraged her to leave the workplace after wrapping up the work. With this, she got time to nourish her hobbies and relationships.
"I feel like I have finally come alive," she said to the publication.
