TikTok comeback hopes crash! Ban continues in India, here’s what we know
India banned TikTok on June 29, 2020, under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, citing risks to sovereignty, security, and public order. The order covered 59 Chinese apps and has remained in force since. However, recently, some Indian users reported that TikTok’s website briefly loaded, sparking speculation of a return. But, the app is still absent from Indian app stores, and there has been no official restoration of service.
Notably, some Indian users reported being able to access TikTok’s website. However, they were able to access just the landing page or 'About Us' section, without being able to log in, watch videos, or interact with content. Moreover, the app itself is still absent from both Google Play and Apple’s App Store in India.
According to media reports, Indian government sources publicly clarified on August 22-23 that no order has been issued to lift the ban, calling viral claims 'false and misleading'. As per a report by TechCrunch, TikTok said it has not restored access and continues to comply with India’s directive. As of August 23, 2025, the prohibition stands.
Reportedly, the brief accessibility was unintentional, a network-level misconfiguration, not a sign of reinstatement.
Meanwhile, certain media reports indicate that ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, has explored ways to re-enter the Indian market lawfully. This includes discussions with Indian firms such as the Hiranandani Group’s Yotta for data localization and compliance with India’s IT rules. Analysts suggest that any official return would require government approval, robust data storage within India, and strict adherence to cybersecurity audits.
The rumours coincided with tentative improvements in India-China ties. This week, the two sides agreed to resume direct flights and expand economic links as they work to stabilise relations after years of strain. New Delhi has also confirmed PM Narendra Modi’s late-August visit to China for the SCO summit, underscoring the diplomatic thaw, even as border issues remain sensitive.
As of now, TikTok remains banned in India.
