Talented Indian cricketer Abhishek Sharma's career has been significantly shaped under the guidance of former India star Yuvraj Singh. Recognised as a mainstay in India's T20 International (T20I) set-up, Abhishek frequently credits Yuvraj's mentorship as a cornerstone of his growth. Yuvraj, in return, lauds Abhishek's development, most notably applauding his massive 141-run innings against Punjab Kings.

Planted Seeds of Success

The roots of this mentoring relationship trace back to Yuvraj's father, Yograj Singh, who revealed the backstory in a recent interview. Yuvraj first spotted Abhishek's potential during Punjab's age-group tournaments, which prompted him to verify Abhishek's statistics with the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA). Initially, it was recorded that Abhishek was a bowler. "When we asked for Abhishek Sharma's records, they tagged him as a bowler. Yuvi was firm about checking his true performance history," Yograj explained. "Surprisingly, Abhishek had already achieved 24 centuries, which contradicted the earlier reports." This discovery occurred approximately six to seven years ago.

Discipline & Dedication

Yograj also narrated Yuvraj's efforts in instilling discipline in Abhishek. Yuvraj discouraged Abhishek from leading a distracted lifestyle, filled with late-night outings and unnecessary social gatherings. Yograj humorously shared how Yuvraj took control of the situation: "During late-night escapades, Yuvi would call, saying, 'Where are you? It's 9pm, time to sleep. Do you hear me? I'm coming.' He made sure Abhishek adhered to a sound routine."

Building Young Diamonds

The veteran cricketer, Yuvraj, applied similar principles with Shubman Gill, another rising star, known for his participation in the U19 World Cup in 2018 alongside Abhishek. According to Yograj, Yuvraj’s mentorship was crucial in nurturing talents like Abhishek and Shubman.

"When a diamond comes under the guardianship of another diamond, it becomes a Kohinoor. Mishandling could lead to missed potential, like many others whose careers didn't flourish," Yograj concluded.
