Will Rohit Sharma lead India till 2027?

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

The ICC's promotional poster for India's 2026 England tour featuring Rohit Sharma sparked speculation about his ODI captaincy future, especially with the 2027 World Cup in view.

The ICC may have just sent Indian cricket fans into a frenzy—thanks to what seemed like an ordinary promotional poster. The graphic for India’s 2026 white-ball tour of England featured England’s skipper Harry Brook alongside India’s current ODI captain Rohit Sharma. The choice sparked speculation: if Rohit is the poster’s focal point for 2026, could he still be leading the side into the 2027 World Cup?

Rohit has already bid farewell to T20Is after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph and stepped away from Test cricket following the England series. That leaves him as a one-format specialist, dedicated solely to ODIs.

The ICC has since removed the post without explanation.

Adding to the intrigue are earlier remarks from India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, who stressed that 2027 planning is still some way off.

“We’ve got a T20 World Cup before that, which is a huge tournament happening in India in February-March. After the England series, our entire focus will be on that. The 2027 World Cup is still two-and-a-half years away,” Gambhir said before the England series.

“If you keep performing, age is just a number,” he added.

Meanwhile, India’s leadership landscape is shifting. In Tests, new captain Shubman Gill guided the team to a hard-fought 2-2 draw against England, showing composure and confidence. In T20Is, Suryakumar Yadav has emerged as a steady skipper, seamlessly carrying forward the transition from Rohit.

Whether Rohit will captain India in ODIs through 2027 remains unclear—but the ICC’s poster and Gambhir’s open-ended comments have certainly set tongues wagging.
