Later, he was seen limping his way off the field with his right shoe in his hand. Angry, he later hurls his boot to the ground, already in tears.

He was seen crying profusely, covering his face in sheer disappointment at the injury, and more so for not being able to contribute for his team in the final. However, his teammates rush to him and try to console him.

The entire stadium echoed with ‘Messi Messi’ chants to which the Colombia fans responded with ‘James, James James!’

According to reports, Messi had been dealing with a leg injury and discomfort through much of the tournament and missed Argentina’s group stage finale. Even as Messi was rested, Lautaro Martinez scored in the 111th minute to help Argentina beat Colombia 1-0 to win the 2024 Copa America title.

This is Argentina’s 16th title in the South America’s premier international competition. With this, they have overtaken Uruguay as the most successful team in its history. Moreover, this is Argentina’s second consecutive Copa America title, in addition to the 2022 World cup title.
