Surya Kumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav has enjoyed a promising start to his journey as India’s full-time T20I captain after Rohit Sharma’s retirement. However, his own form with the bat has become a talking point. Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has raised concerns about the skipper’s lack of runs, even as he continues to impress as a leader.
Since taking over as captain, Suryakumar has scored just 258 runs in 14 innings at a modest average of 18.42, with only two half-centuries. Jaffer, who once captained Surya in first-class cricket, believes the batter’s shot selection has let him down in recent internationals. “His numbers dropping while leading India is a worry. He was playing mostly behind square on the leg side, which made him predictable,” Jaffer explained.
Jaffer, however, pointed out that Suryakumar showed positive signs in the IPL, where he expanded his range and began scoring heavily on the off side as well. “When Surya plays all around the wicket, bowlers have no margin. That makes him very dangerous,” he added, expressing hope the form continues into the international arena.
Quashing speculation about Shubman Gill’s appointment as vice-captain, Jaffer clarified it doesn’t put Suryakumar’s role in doubt. “Every tour has a vice-captain. Surya remains the captain, and experienced players like Bumrah, Hardik, and Gill will only help him in crunch moments,” he said.
The Asia Cup 2025 in Dubai, beginning September 10 against the UAE, will be Suryakumar’s first major test as captain. With questions over team combinations and his own form, the spotlight will firmly be on him.
