Vinod Kambli
Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli, once hailed as one of the brightest batting prodigies of the 1990s, is facing yet another tough battle, this time with his health. Months after being hospitalised for a brain clot, the 52-year-old continues to struggle with his speech, leaving fans and the cricketing fraternity deeply concerned.
His younger brother Virendra Kambli has now shared an emotional update, urging supporters to keep the former star in their prayers as he continues on the long road to recovery.
Kambli, who represented India in 17 Tests and 104 ODIs, was admitted to Akruti Hospital in Thane on December 21, 2024, after suffering from a urinary infection and cramps. Further examinations revealed blood clots in his brain, leading to an extended stay. He was discharged on January 1, 2025, and has since been recuperating at his Bandra home.
Speaking on The Vickey Lalwani Show, Virendra shared: “He is home now but still has difficulty speaking. He is stable, but treatment is ongoing. It will take time, but he is a champion and I believe he will come back. I just request everyone to keep him in their prayers.”
Virendra added that Kambli underwent 10 days of rehab, with complete body check-ups and physiotherapy to help him walk again. While his speech remains slurred, he is showing gradual improvement.
Kambli’s struggles have been widely discussed in cricketing circles, especially after a recent video with Sachin Tendulkar highlighted his weakened condition. Once hailed as one of India’s brightest batting talents in the 1990s, his post-retirement years have been marked by health issues, including two heart attacks in 2013, as well as battles with addiction and financial difficulties.
Despite these hardships, the cricket fraternity has rallied around him. With support from legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, and Sachin Tendulkar, and with fans’ prayers, there remains hope that Vinod Kambli can overcome this latest challenge.
