Gautam Gambhir
Since stepping in as Team India’s head coach, former opener Gautam Gambhir has found himself at the center of constant scrutiny. Despite a strong start with a clean sweep over Bangladesh, India’s aura of home dominance cracked with a series defeat against New Zealand.
The heartbreak worsened with the loss of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia, which also denied India a berth in the World Test Championship final.
The transition has been tougher with stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retiring from Tests, leaving the side in search of a new identity. Critics have questioned Gambhir’s tactics and his ability to rebuild a winning Test unit.
Amid the chatter, all-rounder Shardul Thakur has publicly backed Gambhir. In a chat with Revsportz, Thakur praised the coach’s energy and fighting spirit, qualities he says are rubbing off on the team.
“We have always seen him as a player who fights for the team. In huddles, he transfers that same energy to us. He is an achiever who has won trophies, and he brings that motivation into the dressing room,” Thakur said.
Thakur pointed to India’s spirited show in England as proof of Gambhir’s influence, highlighting the never-give-up attitude instilled in the players. Looking ahead, Gambhir’s immediate challenge will be the Asia Cup 2025, with attention on whether he opts for fresh faces or experienced T20 campaigners.
Despite criticism, Thakur believes the team is heading in the right direction, convinced Gambhir is the right man to guide India forward.
