Shubman Gill
3rd July 2025 will be etched forever in Indian cricket history and in Shubman Gill’s life. On that day, the young Indian skipper delivered a masterclass at Edgbaston, scoring a career-best 269 runs that not only broke records but also redefined his journey as a leader. With India reducing England to 77/3, Gill’s monumental innings placed his team in a commanding position and made him the highest-scoring visiting Asian captain in a Test match on English soil. The 25-year-old credits head coach Gautam Gambhir for helping him unlock this historic performance.
According to Hindustan Times, having already scored a hundred in the first Test, Gill’s knock at Edgbaston marked his second consecutive century as captain. This time, he went much further, surpassing his previous first-class best of 268 for Punjab in the 2018–19 season. His double century also made him the first Asian captain to achieve a 200-plus score in a Test in England.
Speaking to former cricketer Deep Dasgupta, Gill revealed he struggled early on, managing only 35-40 runs by Tea on Day 1. “I spoke to GG bhai and told him I was finding it hard to get boundaries. He reminded me to stay patient and keep things simple. That chat unlocked my rhythm,” Gill shared.
Reflecting on his approach, Gill admitted his focus had shifted from chasing big scores to simply enjoying his batting. “During IPL and before this series, I worked on concentrating less on outcomes and more on the process. When you start enjoying your time at the crease, big scores follow naturally,” he said.
Gill’s Edgbaston epic is more than just numbers on a scoreboard. It’s a testament to resilience, mental clarity, and the guidance of a coach who believes in him. As India eyes a series victory, their young captain has already shown he’s ready to carve his legacy in cricket’s most challenging arenas.
