Sachin Tendulkar and Prithvi Shaw
Once touted as one of India cricket’s brightest young stars, Prithvi Shaw is currently navigating one of the lowest phases of his professional career. Dropped from the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad for the 2024–25 season and going unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, the 24-year-old batter has faced a steep fall from early promise. But even amid the gloom, Shaw has found a glimmer of hope and inspiration from none other than the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
In a recent interview with News24, Shaw opened up about a heart-to-heart conversation he had with Tendulkar just two months ago. Recounting their meeting at the MIG Ground, where both were present for practice sessions, Shaw said, “Sachin sir knows about my journey. Arjun and I have been friends since we were 8 or 9 years old, and Sir was always around. When things go awry, you need that mentor who can spark something inside you.”
“Prithvi, I still believe in you, and I’ll continue to do so,” said Tendulkar, adding, “Come back on the same track as earlier. You still have 13–14 years ahead of you; everything is possible.”
In a move signalling his desire for a fresh start, Shaw has written to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) seeking a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to switch teams in the domestic circuit. The young batter stated in his letter that he has received an offer from another state association and believes the change could better contribute to his growth and development as a cricketer.
Shaw, who last played for India during the Sri Lanka tour in 2021, has since struggled with form, fitness, and consistency, falling out of the national selectors’ radar since 2022.
Though Shaw’s journey has hit a rough patch, the support of a mentor like Sachin Tendulkar could prove invaluable in rekindling the hunger and discipline that once made him a teenage prodigy. With his decision to explore new domestic avenues, Prithvi Shaw appears determined to reset his career, and the belief of a legend might just be the fuel he needs. Only time will tell, but one thing is clear Shaw is not giving up, and he’s not alone.
