Rohit, Virat & Gill criticised for ‘ignoring’ this legend cricketer's wisdom

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Karsan Ghavri laments current cricketers like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli not seeking Sunil Gavaskar's mentorship, despite his legendary status and invaluable advice.

Virat, Rohit and Shubman

Sunil Gavaskar’s name is etched in golden letters in Indian cricket history. The legendary opener is not only admired for his batting exploits but also revered for his sharp cricketing mind and insightful commentary. For decades, many stalwarts from Sachin Tendulkar to Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag have openly acknowledged how his advice helped them at crucial stages of their careers.

‘Unfortunate That Today’s Players Don’t Seek Him Out’

However, former India pacer Karsan Ghavri believes today’s generation is missing out on Gavaskar’s invaluable guidance. Speaking on the Vickey Lalwani Show, Ghavri expressed disappointment that current stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill haven’t sought Gavaskar’s mentorship.

“Even players from abroad approach him for advice. It’s sad that our own batters don’t,” Ghavri said, adding that Gavaskar’s commentary over the last 25 years is a treasure trove of lessons for youngsters.

Alleged Cold Shoulder from Rohit & Virat

Ghavri also recalled reports of a rift between Rohit Sharma and Gavaskar during India’s tour of Australia, where Rohit was said to be unhappy with the legend’s remarks. Similarly, Virat Kohli’s spat with Gavaskar during the IPL over strike-rate criticism grabbed headlines. Ghavri, however, insisted that such feedback should be taken constructively, not personally.

‘Respect the Great Man’

“It is nonsense. Whether you are Rohit or Virat, you must respect the great man,” Ghavri stressed. “If Gavaskar says something, it is for the player’s own good.”

He contrasted Gavaskar’s subtle style of critique with Ravi Shastri’s bluntness, noting that both are rooted in passion for Indian cricket.
