Robin Uthappa
Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opener Robin Uthappa has made a surprising revelation, he was ready to leave the franchise immediately after helping them clinch the 2014 Indian Premier League (IPL) title. Despite winning the Orange Cap that season with 660 runs, Uthappa wanted to re-enter the auction to maximise his market value.
After Pune Warriors India was terminated from the IPL, Uthappa was bought by KKR for Rs 5 crore in the 2014 auction. Opening alongside skipper Gautam Gambhir, he enjoyed a dream run, averaging 44.00 and playing a pivotal role in KKR’s second title triumph.
Speaking on the KimAppa show with Jarrod Kimber, Uthappa said, “After my big year, I wanted to be released and go back in the auction. At 29, I knew my career window was short, and I wanted to maximise my earnings.”
Uthappa revealed he approached KKR’s leadership with his request, but they refused, insisting he remain a long-term part of the team. “There was no way I could’ve earned more than Rs 5 crore under the contract, but it was worth having the conversation,” he said.
Uthappa stayed with KKR until 2019, later joining Rajasthan Royals for Rs 3 crore and eventually Chennai Super Kings, where he made crucial contributions in their 2021 title run. The veteran, who last played in IPL 2022, has represented six teams over a 15-year IPL career.
