Arshdeep Singh's journey from the dusty lanes of Punjab to the gates of India’s Test squad is a story of persistence, skill, and rising to the occasion. Known for his calm demeanor and lethal swing, the lanky left-arm pacer has now earned praise from one of cricket’s biggest legends—Ricky Ponting.

As India gears up for their high-profile Test series against England starting June 20, Ponting has made a passionate case for Arshdeep’s inclusion in the playing XI, believing he could be the X-factor in English conditions.

“Skillful and Laid-Back”: Ponting’s Praise for Arshdeep

Speaking on The ICC Review, the former Australian captain and current Punjab Kings coach revealed his admiration for Arshdeep, both as a cricketer and as a team man.
“I've had a good chance to get to know him really well,” Ponting said. “He's a fun-loving guy. He's very laid-back around the group, which is what we all like. He’s a great character to have in the dressing room.”

Ponting even celebrated Arshdeep’s Test call-up with the PBKS team. “The first thing I did in our team meeting was congratulate him in front of everyone. It’s well deserved.”

Left-Arm Edge in England

Arshdeep, who picked up 18 wickets in 14 IPL 2025 matches, is no stranger to English conditions, having played county cricket earlier. Ponting believes his style suits the Dukes ball and the swing-friendly pitches in England.

“I’d actually have him in India’s Test team at the start. He’s very skillful,” said Ponting. “With the Dukes ball, and being a left-armer, that’s the point of difference India could use. If they don’t play him, it’ll be a surprise to me.”

Bounce, Swing, and Test-Ready

Standing close to 6'4", Arshdeep possesses the ideal physique for overseas conditions. “He’ll get decent bounce, and that swing bowling ability is gold in England,” Ponting added. “India should definitely keep an eye on him throughout the tour.”

With India aiming for a strong showing in England, the inclusion of a confident, in-form left-armer like Arshdeep Singh could be the secret weapon they didn’t know they needed—but one Ponting believes they absolutely should use.
