Ravindra Jadeja
Like veteran batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s future across formats in the Indian team is also hanging in balance.
As per sources, the senior spin all-rounder is no longer in head coach Gautam Gambhir’s scheme of things for the future.
Jadeja’s form has dipped for the last few months and following continuous poor performances, Jadeja’s future has become uncertain across red-ball and white-ball cricket.
Gambhir and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee are keen on forming a core group keeping the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027 in mind. It is expected that the planning for that ICC tournament will begin with the upcoming Champions Trophy.
“It’s all about when the selectors decide the transition needs to kick in. They will discuss if they want to go with a safe option in Jadeja or move on right now,” said a BCCI official.
As per sources, selectors are on the verge of dropping Jadeja from their ODI scheme of things after a poor form with the bat at No. 7 in the last two years. The southpaw has a poor strike rate of just 75 during the period. The spin all-rounder was not even considered for the ODI tour of Sri Lanka last year shortly after his T20I retirement.
It seems, Axar Patel has pipped Jadeja in the pecking order. Washington Sundar is also in the scheme of things for the spin all-rounders spot. However, Kuldeep Yadav stands as the favourite to make the Champions Trophy squad as a sole specialist spinner.
