Shiv Sunder Das and Halhadar Das
Very few Odia cricketers like Debashish Mohanty, Shiv Sunder Das and Sanjay Raul have played international cricket for the Indian cricket team.
Similarly, Odia cricketer Biplab Samantray has played in the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL). Though Subhranshu Senapati was part of the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings squad, he didn’t get any chance to play in the mega event.
Though many other talented Odia cricketers didn’t get chances to play international cricket due to many factors, some of them were domestic stalwarts. Aggressive wicketkeeper-batsman Halhadar Das was one such player.
Though Halhadar was drafted in the Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders squads, he didn’t get any chance to play in the Indian Premier League.
Halhadar has given great bowlers like Ravichandran Ashwin a good run for money in domestic cricket. Ashwin has mentioned about Halhadhar in his latest book ‘I Have the Streets’.
In the book, Ashwin has written about the life before cricket, his struggles with money and growing up in a cricket-crazed colony.
Ashwin has termed Odia cricketer Halhadar as one of the best players of spin.
“Mithun Manhas, Halhadar Das, Robin Uthappa, Yere Goud, Rajat Bhatia and Sanjay Bangar are all unforgiving to spinners,” wrote Ashwin.
However, while Ashwin went on to become one of the greatest of the games, Halhadar unfortunately went into oblivion due to many factors.
Moreover, the great off-spinner also hailed former India opener Shiv Sunder Das as another best batter against spin.
“And there are some ruthless players of spin going around. If I bowl that poetic line, Shiv Sunder Das will cut me for six boundaries in an over, from third man to either side of cover. And getting cut is totally unacceptable,” wrote Ashwin.
