‘People forget his contributions’: Washington Sundar’s father slams selectors after his son's epic century

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Washington Sundar's father, M. Sundar, criticizes Indian selectors and Gujarat Titans for inconsistent selection despite his son's match-saving century against England and strong all-round stats.

Despite a match-saving century in the fourth Test against England, Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar continues to face inconsistent selection and now, his father M. Sundar has had enough. In a heartfelt and scathing statement, he lashed out at the Indian selectors and IPL franchise Gujarat Titans, questioning why his son doesn’t receive the backing that other players enjoy.

Selectors Ignoring Consistency, Says Father

“Washington has performed consistently, but people forget his contributions,” M. Sundar told The Times of India. He pointed out how other players are given repeated chances, while Washington is dropped after one or two quiet matches.

Washington, who debuted in 2017 and made his Test debut in 2021, has played just 11 Tests, but holds an impressive batting average of 44.86 and a bowling average of 27.87. These numbers, his father argues, make him a true asset as a genuine all-rounder.

Recalling Past Snubs

M. Sundar also highlighted past omissions, recalling Washington’s 85 in Chennai* and 96 in Ahmedabad* during the 2021 England series. Despite those knocks on tough pitches, he was dropped from the squad and remained out for nearly three years before earning a spot in the fourth Test of the ongoing England series where he responded with his maiden Test century.

Franchise Criticism: “GT Didn’t Back Him”

The frustration extended to the IPL, with Sundar slamming Gujarat Titans for underutilising his son. “Even GT doesn’t give him enough chances. He smashed 48 off 24 in the IPL Eliminator against MI and still wasn’t retained in the XI regularly,” he said, drawing comparisons to the consistent backing given to Yashasvi Jaiswal by Rajasthan Royals.

With both numbers and performances in his favour, Washington Sundar's case highlights the larger debate around inconsistent selection policies — and a father's emotional outcry may just spark the conversation cricket fans can no longer ignore.
