Abhishek Sharma
In the shortest format of the game, India has found a new batting backbone in Abhishek Sharma. Since making his debut after the T20 World Cup triumph, the 25-year-old southpaw has showcased fearless stroke play, quickly cementing his spot in the Indian line-up. Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja credits Rohit Sharma’s selfless style in white-ball cricket as the inspiration behind Abhishek’s aggressive approach.
Speaking to Sony Sports, Jadeja explained that Rohit’s willingness to put the team first has allowed younger players to thrive with freedom. “Rohit Sharma may not be here, but he created this habit. Only when you go for big shots can you get out. The team appreciates Abhishek’s style, and the depth of batting gives him the confidence to play this way,” The former Indian player said.
Abhishek has already scored 596 runs in 19 T20Is at an average of 33.11 and a staggering strike rate of 195.40, numbers that highlight his rapid rise.
Former assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, however, feels it is Abhishek’s hunger for the game and relentless practice that have made the difference. “He goes everywhere to play—Delhi, Dehradun, Rajasthan, Mumbai, wherever there’s cricket. It’s not just talent; it’s diligence and mindset,” Nayar remarked.
Abhishek’s form has continued in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025. In just two matches, he has smashed 61 runs at a strike rate of 210.34. Against UAE, he struck a rapid 16-ball 30, while against Pakistan, he hammered an explosive 13-ball 31.
As Jadeja and Nayar suggest, it is both Rohit’s legacy and Abhishek’s relentless drive that are powering India’s new T20 batting star.
